BOOK REVIEW: City of Ember (Danielle S.)

Posted on October 6, 2008. Filed under: Reading | Tags: , |

The book I read over the summer was called City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau.  The City of Ember has a sequel; the sequel is called People of Sparks.  Jeanne DuPrau has also written The Prophet of Yunwood

City of Ember was about two kids named Lina and Doon, who both are twelve.  In Ember, once you are twelve you have to start to work and drop out of school to make a living for the rest of your life.  To decide what they will be when they grow up, the Mayor of Ember comes to their school and lets the kids pick out of a hat and whatever they pick is what job they will have.

Lina and Doon both wanted specific jobs and when they went to go pick the jobs out of a hat Lina got what Doon wanted and Doon got what Lina wanted.  So, at the end of the school year they switch jobs.

When Lina got home her grandmother was looking for something.  She saw her little sister Poppy eating a piece of paper, and it turned out that there is a secret passage way out of Ember that nobody has ever seen before.  They soon discover a new land with a sun, which was so beautiful.  They had a wild adventure to get there, but they made it happy and alive.  Poppy also came along to experience the adventure.  Lina and Doon sent a note to the people of Ember to come to the new land and they realized the city was underground and right under them.

My reaction to the book was that I loved it!  I just couldn’t stop reading it.  The end of the book was a cliffhanger which made me want to read the next sequel.  I never at one point got bored of the book.  They just kept putting things in there that I would never expect that would happen.

I would recommend this book to others because it is a kind of book where you make pictures in your mind and you want to keep reading.

Danielle,
I didn’t know that this was a book too, I just heard about the movie coming out.
It’s actually a very old story, retold a hundred time, about people who discover that there home is only a very small part of the outside world. It teaches us that sometimes we have to remember that there is more to the world than just what we see in front of us.

This is Danielle.
I just wanted to say thanks for reading my review and I learned a lot from the book. I can’t wait to see the movie and see how they put it together on the big screen.

Very nice review! This is an excellent book. If you were the author, what do you think would happen in the next book in the series?

I also like this book. I am not ready yet but I am in a very exciting part. I can’t wait to see the movie! Hope it’s as good as the book!

I kinda read this review after reading the book. I must say I would have given it a similar review, “I loved it! I just couldn’t stop reading it. ” Great post.
