Week at a glance ~ 9/24/12 to 9/28/12

Great job last week with all of the reading work you’ve started!

I’m so glad to see that we’re getting the hang of using the bookmark (to record the days/pages that we read each week as well as organize our individual reading goals). Here’s a quick recap of what we worked on in Reading Workshop last week:

Skills (we used to interact with our reading):

  • Making Connections
  • Questioning/Clarifying (Answering)
  • Determining importance
  • Reacting with strong emotions

Methods/strategies (we used to record our reading responses):

  • A chart
  • Post-Its
  • Annotating the text
  • Writing “long” in our notebooks

(Mrs. Fisher started a handout that contains some of the methods that you can find here.)

READING FOCUS:
Remember, this week you will be continuing your reading response work at home with your independent books.  On Friday, 9/28, your next bookmark and all of your response work will be collected and assessed.  (Remember that it is part of your homework to get the notebook set up at home by Thursday night — no one should be taping or gluing in class.)  I will be using this rubric to assess the work.

On Monday, 9/24, we will go over the rubric and the expectations together (you will get to assess my work with the rubric!), and then you will have the remainder of class time for your own independent reading work.

GRAMMAR FOCUS:
We will be continuing our work with nouns, pronouns, and antecedents this week.  We will have a mini-quiz on these parts of speech and their functions on Friday, 9/28.

WRITING FOCUS:
This week, we will begin our independent writing work.  Because our first unit of study is the Personal Essay, we will begin with generating ideas that allow us to write about our own lives.  We will review the plot structure of a narrative, because these anecdotes we write will play a big part of the personal essay.  As we write our entries, we will be mindful of the elements that make writing fluent and easy for the reader to follow. Also, we will get into the computer lab on Friday so that (as we write another personal narrative entry) we can practice using and sharing Google Docs.

REMINDERS:

  • There is no school on Wednesday, 9/26
  • We will be in the computer lab (616) on Friday, 9/28
  • FLEX rotation this week will be:
    • Monday – period 3
    • Tuesday – period 4
    • Thursday – period 8
    • Friday – period 5

Ms. Morris,

For our reading response, could we write it up neatly on loose leaf, or does it have to be in your notebook or typed?

Thanks!

Jacquelyn

Jacquelyn,
It is up to you to decide how to create your reading response. It can be created directly in the notebook, typed, or written out on loose leaf…it will just have to be placed in the reader’s notebook by Thursday night, so you can submit it on Friday.

I can’t wait to see what you come up with! 🙂
